Foot Control Behavior with Philips SpeechLive

When working with Philips SpeechLive in Google Chrome and Firefox, the foot control behavior changed due to changes in the browser architecture.

The Issue

Due to browser architecture changes, the foot control gamepad events may not arrive in SpeechLive if there is another tab of the same browser in the foreground.

Concerned versions

  • Google Chrome version 73.xxxxx.xx on Windows 10
  • Firefox version 66.x.x

Findings

The above browser versions do not receive the gamepad events if another tab other than the SpeechLive tab is active.

Google Chrome: (version 73.xxxxx.xx on Windows 10)

SpeechLive Tab is active. No other tab is opened in the browser or multiple tabs are opened and the SpeechLive tab is in the forefront. The browser is not minimized. The browser window gets the gamepad button events. Foot control works in SpeechLive.

Work Around

In Chrome, open an Incognito tab via the menu option or hotkey function.

5

In the Incognito tab, log in to SpeechLive as normal.

6

Open and play dictations. DO NOT MINIMIZE the Incognito window. The foot pedal can still control the dictations even if there’s another application on the screen (Word or the normal Chrome window).

If the user needs to access another website they can do so with the normal Chrome window. If a user has both Firefox and Chrome, open SpeechLive in Firefox and do normal web browsing with Chrome (or vice versa).
